fire behavior. For fourteen months between July 2021 and September 2022, I made nine solo trips to the uppermost counties of northern California where fire activity in the state is most concentrated. In August 2022 I also photographed in southern Oregon. I typically travel for several days or weeks at a time following a process that is both intuitive and heavily researched. Although I am influenced by the documentary tradition, I am not presenting these pictures as reportage of wildfires. My intention with Volcanoville is to see in a more mythic way, to photograph along the boundary line between death and survival. Where I like to work is further out from the emergency frontlines where there are fewer stories. It’s on the outskirts, in this liminal space, that the psyche of the landscape and its people feel visible to me. Portraiture is an essential part of this process, and unlike the landscape images which are all digital, the portraits are made using a 4x5 large format field camera. I made this decision for aesthetic and ethical reasons. Everyone I approach is a stranger and the context in which we meet is often deeply emotional. The analog process is slow and invites a more collaborative experience. I also find that the film portraits resonate with greater emotional depth. The title, Volcanoville, is a reference to the name of a small California mountain town spared in 2022 by crews fighting the Mosquito Fire. Instagram’s shipping container exhibits at Photoville were the first public exhibitions in the company’s history. The 2014 edition featured an exterior mural hand painted by @dalek2020, a 15’ interior hand-cranked Explore page scroll, and image galleries displayed on two levels. The 2015 edition included a spiral staircase connecting two downstairs galleries with a rooftop installation of images mounted on cubic forms. These exhibitions were designed to bring to life the vibrant creative community featured everyday on @instagram and to create a beacon for community gathering in NYC. <img width="2000" height="2000" Since 2021, he has followed the cycles of fires and floods reshaping the California landscape, documenting major ecological events and their aftermath to understand the impact of climate change. Andrew's work has been published online in the New York Times and exhibited in San Francisco at Small Works Projects and group shows at CULT Aimee Friberg and Book and Job Gallery. He is a former National Geographic Young Explorer grantee and graduate of Georgetown University. Andrew’s career began as the Managing Director of the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph, an international 3-day photography celebration led by editors at National Geographic, Aperture, and the NYTimes. As the festival director, Andrew organized exhibitions with photographic luminaries including Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, Richard Misrach, Carrie Mae Weems, Josef Koudelka and many others. In 2009, he was the recipient of a National Geographic Young Explorer grant to carry out The American Festivals Project, a year-long photography expedition to document hidden and bizarre festivals across America.
