In Light Years is a project of large format photographs that began in April 2023. The work was born when atmospheric rivers made landfall last winter and covered the entire state in snow and rain, pulling California out of an intense prolonged drought. I wanted to observe how the landscape rehydrated itself and opened up in this rare moment of extreme abundance.

Using a 4x5 field camera, I gave myself wide permission to experiment in recording the earth’s magnificence on sheet film. This led to photographs made by single exposure, multiple exposure and long-exposure, where I asked the camera to speak to the movements of the natural world that we can’t easily observe with our own eyes, like the multi-hour path of the moon’s ascent or the ancient waterways moving snowmelt back to the ocean. The extraordinary scale of the earth in its cycles of re-creation is a mythological reminder of my insignificance in the ongoing drama of the universe, and simultaneously an urgent call for me to place myself at the center of it.

In Light Years is on view starting November 10, 2023 in my apartment gallery located at 1065 Dolores Street in San Francisco. Email andrew@andrewowen.tv to make a viewing appointment, or send a DM to @andrewowen.
